We love the seaside and for the last few years we have spent Easter and October half term on the Yorkshire coast – there are some great things to do with the kids in Bridlington.
My grandma had a static holiday caravan in a nearby village and it became our safe haven – the kids loved it. Sadly, she recently sold it so now we need to find a new place to stay.
However, having tried and tested lots of the activities in the area, I can reveal some of the great things to do with the kids in Bridlington – particularly for families of children with additional needs.
1. The beach
You can’t go to Bridlington without going to the beach. There are two beaches – North and South. Bridlington South is over a mile long with a wide expanse of sand near Bridlington Spa and the harbour.
The south beach has toilets with disabled facilities, beach huts and deck chairs for hire, a first aid post and lost child centre.
Bridlington North is a narrower sand and pebble beach with an attractive promenade and great views of the impressive chalk cliffs of Flamborough Headland.
We tend to gravitate towards the south beach. Bears love it in all weathers. When it’s windy, they fly kites, in the rain the waterproofs and wellies go on and they splash in the sea. When it’s sunny, the buckets and spades come out and it’s glorious. And you’re never too far from some good fish and chips….
2. Land train
For two train-mad young boys, the land trains are a brilliant source of entertainment. The novelty trains operate along Bridlington’s promenades. Two trains run on the North Promenade between East Riding Leisure Bridlington and Sewerby Hall and Gardens. One Land Train runs on the South Promenade linking Bridlington town centre to the park and ride and South Cliff Caravan Park.
The trains run from Easter to the end of September between 10.30am until at least 4pm. During summer holidays they run until 5pm.
Prices vary depending on the journey but start at £1.50 per person.
We often park the car at the park and ride and get the train along the South Promenade to the beach. The North Promenade train is a pretty journey up to Sewerby Hall.
3. Sewerby Hall
We visited Sewerby Hall at Easter and were really impressed with how child-friendly and welcoming it was. Big Bear and I did an Easter Egg hunt in the hall and he loved the nursery where there were lots of wooden toys for children to play with. There were lots of activities to keep children entertained in the house and the staff were really friendly and informative.
The attraction has animals and an outdoor play area. There were outdoor pirate treasure hunts and giant garden games on the day we went too.
It’s a great place for a picnic, with fantastic views from the cliffs, and for added adventure you can get the land train to the hall from the north promenade.
High season holiday prices are £8 for an adult and £5.90 for children age 3-15. Families with a Max card get a 25 per cent discount on the admission price.
4. Fair
The fair, in between the north and south beaches, is one of the most exciting places to go if you’re a child.
It’s noisy and can get busy, which is worth noting if you have a little one who is sensitive to those things, but it’s a lot of fun and both Bears love it.
They particularly enjoy the vehicle ride (pictured above) where you can choose your own mode of transport.
There is also a caterpillar rollercoaster further along the promenade as well as traditional chair swings. Payment is by tokens bought at the kiosks near the rides.
5. Swimming
A relatively new addition to Bridlington, the leisure centre is always a good option. It has a splash zone, suitable for all the family from toddlers through to adults. It also features a Clip ‘n’ Climb and soft play area. The North Promenade land train stops outside the centre.
