1. Durham University Botanic Garden, Durham

The Botanic Garden is a great place for kids to explore and hosts lots of free family activities and events. It runs a family activity, suitable for children, on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon most weekends throughout the year. Many of the events are inspired by the natural setting of the garden, with activities ranging from traditional crafts to storytelling.

2. Killhope Lead Mining Museum, Upper Weardale, County Durham


This award winning Victorian mining museum is located in the centre of the North Pennines. Visitors over the age of four can take a mine tour. Other activities include finding your own minerals, walking the woodland trails to see red squirrels, and visiting Killhope shop and café. There is free parking and dogs are welcome.

3. Oriental Museum, Durham


From Ancient Egypt to modern China, the Oriental Museum is the only museum in the north of England devoted entirely to the art and archaeology of Northern Africa and Asia. The museum regularly hosts family-friendly activities, including crafts and storytelling.

4. The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, County Durham


The Bowes Museum offers one of Britain’s most fascinating museum experiences. Go on a wonderful journey and discover the romantic story that led to the creation of this impressive building and amazing collection. The museum has a range of activities for families, including an adventure play area, woodland walks, picnic areas, museum explorer backpacks, interactive resources and orienteering trails. The museum holds regular family events in the school holidays. During term time it hosts a weekly toddler group and also an after school club for children aged between 7-12 years.
